Pardes Hannah will be embarking on a very ambitious and meaningful project: creating and building a new siddur. We are fortunate to have Rabbi Daniel Siegel, the Director of Spiritual Resources for ALEPH (Alliance for Jewish Renewal) and the ALEPH Bet Midrash to help guide us in this project. Rabbi Siegel edited Siddur Kol Koreh which is being used by a number of ALEPH communities.

We will use the Kol Koreh Siddur as the framework for our siddur. We add what we want; we take away what we want. We will break the work into sections: (1) Birchat Hashachar, (2) Pseukey D'Zimrah, (3) Shacharit up to the Amidah, (4) the Amidah, (5) The Torah service, and (6)the aleinu and closing prayers, Kaddish etc.

Rabbi Siegel will be guiding us in discussing the kavanot for each section and the traditional prayers. Together we will look at additional readings, poems, prayers, chants and different translations of the traditional prayers. Then we make our selections. Our siddur will be in a loose leaf binder so we can add and replace pages easier when needed.

We envision this siddur building to be year-long project. Our idea is to ask individuals to commit to one section (they could do more.) Rabbi Siegel will guide us in four to six sessions (if needed) on each section over a two to three month period (if needed). During the year we can "try out" the selections at services and get feedback.

From Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi: "When I davven, I envision myself as entering into a conversation with G-d, I am not trying to get through a service." The prayer book is a guide for offering the heart's feelings to G-d. To understand how this is possible, you have to see the siddur in an entirely different way. The siddur is like a coloring book with outlines. People have to fill it in with life, background, and context."

We are really excited about this opportunity to learn, to build a siddur and to strengthen our community.
